KNX System Overview

This module introduces the minimum requirements to form a KNX installation and how they are addressed. It then looks at how group addressing is used for run time communication alongside the function of datapoints to guarantee device interoperability. The structure of telegrams is briefly explained before a more in-depth look at how bus communication works including the role of chokes which are integrated in KNX power supplies. Finally, the distance and device limits on a single line are covered along with the reasons why these are needed. 

By the end of this module, you will know: 

  • What is individual addressing and what is it used for
  • Group addressing naming schemes, use, and functions 
  • Group objects, use, and functions 
  • DPT's, why are they needed, and some examples of the most commonly used

KNX System Arguments

KNX has existed for over 30 years as the leading standard for home and building automation. This module explores the structure and roles of the KNX association and the different ways the KNX standard is implemented as system solutions. It also covers the unique value proposition that is KNX with a detailed look at the sales arguments.

TP Installation

In this module we will cover the physical parts of the KNX installation starting with an explanation of SELV, the KNX cable and the requirements when installing. After a quick look at DIN rail cabinets, the use of KNX power supplies is covered in depth including the standard features, the use of auxiliary connections, and distributed power supplies. The physical connections to the bus and the benefits of having a standard removable push connector are covered followed by a look at lighting & overvoltage protection for the system, as well as running cables between buildings. Finally the testing methods for a KNX installation are detailed.

You will learn:

  • The safety requirement for the KNX system in relation to insulation and SELV
  • The testing requirements for the KNX installation
  • How standard and additional lighting protection works in a KNX installation
  • The correct usage of power supply and choke including the number of devices and limits on using multiple devices
  • The benefits of the KNX connector and its usage
  • How to test the KNX installation
  • The best practice for completing the project and handing over

TP Topology

The KNX system can have over 60,000 devices. This module looks into the way this is managed using lines, areas, and backbone areas. Line couplers are introduced, explaining how they perform to manage the traffic flow through the system. Finally the use of KNX IP lines is covered including their role in larger systems and how to ensure the bus integrity is protected.

You will learn:

  • Line structure for installation older than 2018
  • How to establish if a device is TP64 (older than 2018) or TP256 (newer than 2018)
  • The overall structure of a KNX installation including lines, areas, and backbone areas
  • To correctly identify the address of devices based on their location in the topology
  • How many devices can be on each level of the topology
  • How line couplers function including powering, filter tables, and routing different types of telegram
  • The function of the routing counter and how it decrements
  • What a KNX media coupler is
  • The wiring topologies of a KNX line
  • How to calculate the total number of devices on a line
  • How telegrams are routed around the system and the reasons for this
  • How to connect external systems to KNX

Bus Devices

This module looks at the configuration of KNX devices, including those that are broken down into multiple parts to make installation easier. The different types of bus devices - including memory capacities - is explained and the way the applications are stored in the devices is covered. Information on how devices reset when faced with low voltage and different device types is also included.

You will learn:

  • The functions of a BCU, AM and PEI
  • The different systems profiles and impact on memory and application programs
  • How a device can be locked and the consequences
  • The functions of sensors, actuators, and controllers
  • How devices respond when the bus voltage fails
  • Programming address into devices and serial numbers

KNX and RF

This module explores the use of KNX RF as either a standalone solution or as an extension to a wired KNX System. The impact of a building's fabric on signal strength will be covered along with how to extend the system with repeaters. This is followed by an in-depth look at the technology KNX RF uses including how multiple channels can be utilised to increase the reliability of systems. Comparisons between the current KNX RF S mode and the older KNX E mode will also be explained.

You will learn:

  • The range of KNX RF and the impact of walls
  • The use of KNX repeaters
  • The tools used to commissioning KNX RF S Mode and the difference to KNX E Mode
  • The technology of KNX RF, the difference between KNX Multi and KNX Ready
  • The use of KNX Multi channel, slow and fast telegrams
  • How KNX RF devices transmit and ensure batteries aren't drained

ETS Programming

This module is delivered face to face. The practical course how to use ETS to program KNX using lighting and shading examples, how to run diagnostics with ETS, and finishes with the theoretical and practical certification exams. Please note that the online modules must be completed prior to attending this in-person training.

KNX Instructor

Ben Lewis

Ben has a lifetime of experience in the electronics industry, having spent the first half of his career as a design engineer in telecoms, computers and power electronics. Over 20 years ago, Ben became one of the UK's pioneers of KNX and since then he has focused all his professional attention on the application of KNX in the UK market and is now widely recognised as an industry expert. Ben formed KNX Consultants Ltd. in 2009 with a view to working alongside the electrical installation industry to use KNX in the growth of building technology, and since then KNX Consultants Ltd. has become actively involved in projects around the country and abroad.

Ben has been teaching KNX and examining candidates for KNX Partner accreditation since 2008 and it's been suggested that he is personally responsible for having trained more than half the UK's registered KNX Partners. Ben has been engaged in CEDIA's KNX training from its outset.

As well as being a KNX Association accredited KNX Tutor, Ben has an honours degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and is a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET).
